The penninsula is long and narrow, extending to the ENE direction. and has an island at the Eastern end named TiriTiri Matangi Island.

Parks and recreation.

Whangaparaoa currently has 3 golf courses, Whangaparaoa golf course, Gulf Harbour Country Club, and Penninsula Golf Club (which is sold and may be developed into housing).
Due primarily to the easy access to the coast, the peninsula has a number of sailing, boating and fishing clubs.
Kayaking is a popular pastime, and Kayak fishing is also growing in popularity due primarily to the relatively low cost of equipment compared to power boating.

Town Centres.

Red Beach Town Centre GPS(-36.606532,174.698575) is at the start of the penninsula, on the northern side.
The centre is on Read beach road (linking Whangaparaoa road and the Hibiscus Coast Highway) on the corner of Bay Street.

Whangaparaoa Town Centre GPS(-36.636184,174.747021) is situated halfway along the penninsula, between Stanmore Bay and Arkles Bay.

The town centre serves the greater community, and as such a large number of businesses can be seen in the adjacent area.

Although the Town Centre is in itself not a region, it is referred to locally as 'Whangaparaoa'. If a person was to say I am going to Whangaparaoa, it would refer to the town centre.

Gulf Harbour is the youngest town on the penninsula, with (at presant) development of the adjacent areas, continuing.

Access.

Currently, there is only one main acces to the penninsula, which is via Whangaparaoa road, which links to other smaller roads servicing the various areas.
There is however a new access road planned for the penninsula which is planned for a southern access from Redvale in the south, through silverdale and over the Weiti River, terminating at whangaparaoa road near Beverley Road.
The Road is proposed as the Penlink and more information can be seen about the development [here].
